Nitro Racers PC review
Nitro Racers is a racing simulation game from 3DO that was recently released in Europe only. It will be released in the U.S. some time later this year. This fast-paced game puts you in control of a race car as it whips around one of 30 tracks. The game resembles the Off Road game in the arcades, where four trucks battled it out on dirt tracks. Your view of the track is either from high above, where the whole track fits in your screen, or in a split-screen mode. It reminded me of racing the radio-controlled cars around the track in my living room as a kid.

The game can be played in two modes, arcade or simulation. In arcade mode, you play a simple racing game and race the given number of laps; first one across wins. In the management mode, you must watch your fuel and damage and will have to pit at least once in each race. You earn money based on where you finish in each race. In between races you can update the skill of your pit crew, the quality of your tires, or the power of your engine. You will need the added features because the races get tougher and the competition gets faster the farther you go. In both cases, you must stay in the top three among point leaders to continue to the next track. Points are given to each player based on where they finish in a race.

Depending on what difficulty level you’re playing (easy, medium, or hard), you’ll have three, five, or seven competing cars on the track with you. Your game screen gives you info on what place you’re in, what your total time is, and what your best lap time is. The object is simple, finish the race in the top three or your game’s over. If you’re successful in placing in the top three, the game will chart the scores for all the cars and display them between races. Not only do you want to finish well, but you want to move up in the overall standings.

However, your competition has no intention of making this easy. You’ll find yourself bumping and grinding the whole way around the track if you’re not careful. 3DO designed some pretty cool and challenging tracks for you to test your metal, and your mettle. They range from simple street and circular tracks, to courses in the jungle and ones covered with snow. If things get too close for comfort, you can always get a boost of speed by using nitrous. These provide a blast of power and can quickly separate you from the pack, or catch you up to the leader if you are behind. Extra nitrous appears throughout the courses during each race, and the first car to run over the pack gets the extra nitrous.

Graphics:

First, Nitro Racers is a DOS-based program, although it will run in a Windows 95 box. It does not use DirectX. The full screen view was adequate for playing the game, but the split screen and scrolling screens looked bad. The pixelation in these latter views was pretty high and almost made the game unplayable. The full screen, because of its wide focus, did not require a lot of detail. As a result, the graphics were pretty clear and clean in this mode. Certainly, they were not outstanding, but the cars moved smoothly around the track and there was no noticeable lag between controlling the cars and having the cars respond. However, there was a lot of opportunity for improved graphics in this game. It was a lot like racing cars around one of those tracks in your living room, and about that much animation. No visible moving parts, no debris from crashes, and basically only the pit stops in management mode provided any animation during the game. One good part of the graphics I will mention was the creativity that went into creating the 30 different tracks. There were interesting, different, and well designed.

Gameplay:

This game was kind of fun to play, and certainly requires a lot less skill than any of the 3D racing simulation games on the market. The “god” perspective, instead of 1st or 3rd person, was a nice change for those of us who were feeling a little nostalgic. This is an incredibly easy game to play and truly a load-and-play kind of game. It bordered on being too simplistic, with not enough variety or options. The management mode at least brought some strategy into the game, in terms of when was a good time to pit stop. Also, I had to decide on which parts of my car to improve in between races. The game could have been a lot more fun with a few added features (i.e., multi-player Internet play), but it did okay despite these omissions.

Interface:

What interface? During the game, there were five keys I needed to use to control steering, acceleration, brakes, and nitro. Obviously, using other game controls, like a joystick, made it even easier to control my car. There was a key to pause the game and the key to quit the game I was playing. Outside of the game, there were a few options I could use to customize gameplay, including the aforementioned three screen views and the management or arcade mode. In between races while playing in management mode, I had the opportunity to customize my car using the money I had earned. Still, there were other options that could have been added. Where was the “do over” option if I wanted to restart the current race? Where was the instant replay feature to watch a particularly satisfying victory again?

Sound FX:
When our writing staff had a meeting during E3, we discussed what it would take to earn a “0″ for a category; we have our answer. Just because this game was apparently designed to be a low-end game doesn’t mean they should have ignored the FX; they were frightfully lacking. There must have been a handful of FX in the entire game, at most. Hitting a wall provided a 1/2 second sound of glass breaking, which sounded really cheesy. Similarly, hitting another car provided another pathetic bumping noise. It was like the sound FX you hear using your word processor, only not as good. It reminded me a lot of the FX in the Tank Pong game I used to play on my old Atari system, and that was 15 years ago. I don’t mean to be too harsh guys, but these FX were mighty lame.

Musical Score:
Picture from Nitro Racers PC review Nitro Racers came with 16 funky techno tracks to keep my blood pumping. The tracks were all clean and good quality. While they were largely simplistic, I liked them and thought they added to the game nicely. Having just ripped their FX, perhaps I was more lenient on the musical score than I should have been. But, I thought they were well done and deserved recognition. This is especially true given that the music had to carry the entire audio component of the game on its own.

Difficulty & Intelligence:
Picture from Nitro Racers PC review This game was basically an average challenge. The arcade mode on easy and normal difficulty provided few competitors and relatively easy competition. The hard level was definitely more difficult, although a little practice had me at the front of the pack consistently. The management mode was much tougher to play. It was not just the pit stop element that made the game harder. The cars just generally seemed to run the course smoother and more quickly, which meant I had to make fewer mistakes to keep up. Several times while playing both modes I got stuck in the back of the pack and the cars in front of me made it difficult to get around them. In general, this game provided an average level of competition.

Overall:

This game was actually kind of fun to play. Get past some of the weaker elements and an okay lower end game was there. I know 3DO is planning on releasing this in the U.S. in a few months for a pretty low price. I would consider getting it, if it cost around $15 or so. Much more than that would be better spent towards a real (3D) racing simulation game. I am not as familiar with what is available on the European market, so I hesitate to recommend or not recommend this game to those of you overseas. My best advice is, just be sure you know what you are getting for your money. There is a pretty good concept here, but it is short on bells and whistles and average on enjoyment.
